An investigative report published this weekend offered an unsettling peek at the misogynistic culture women serving in the military have to deal with on a regular basis. According to the story, published on the Center for Investigative Reporting's website , hundreds of Marines stationed across the world are being investigated for allegedly sharing nude photos of female service members and veterans. Members of the Facebook group "Marines United" allegedly solicited and published to a Google Drive folder explicit images of female service members, some of which were taken without consent. Other photos appeared to have been taken by the women themselves, though it appears they were published without their knowledge. The folder has since been taken down. Some said they worry their own accounts might have been hacked or poached. One said a co-worker, a male Marine, alerted her to the fact that the photographs had been posted.

The Unites States Marine Corps is scrambling to address the fallout from revelations over the weekend of a Facebook group where hundreds of nude photos of female service members, veterans, and civilians were posted without their consent by other Marines. Military officials are reportedly investigating the matter, which has reignited discussions over the treatment of women in the military. The photo scandal comes two months after three female Marines became the first women to join the infantry. In at least one incident, comments on a photo advocated for a woman to be sexually assaulted. Photos posted in the group, which has more than 30, members, many using their personal Facebook accounts, reportedly drew plenty of attention, inspiring more than 2, comments.

The US Department of Defense is currently investigating hundreds of marines for spreading naked photos of female soldiers and veterans in a private group on Facebook. According to the report, members of the secretive Facebook group used the photos to identify more than two dozen women — some of whom are still enlisted in the military — by full name, rank and military duty. While the accounts associated with the naked photos have been reportedly shut down, it remains unclear whether the abusive page has been entirely wiped from the internet. The report further notes that some of the offenders have since been discharged as a result of the investigation.
